Darkspire Reaches eBook CN Lesley Reviews
I wanted to try out a different kind of fantasy novel, so I did some looking on and found Darkspire Reaches by C N Lesley. It turned out to be a good choice!
Synopsis (from the author) The wyvern has hunted for the young outcast all her life; a day will come when, after being rejected by civilisation and the tribes, she must at last face him.
Abandoned as a sacrifice to the wyvern, a young girl is raised to fear the beast her adoptive clan believes meant to kill her. When the Emperor outlaws all magic, Raven is forced to flee from her home with her foster mother, for both are judged as witches. Now an outcast, she lives at the mercy of others, forever pursued by the wyvern. Soon her life will change forever.

What I liked There were many likeable aspects about this novel. First, the character of Raven was a nice example of a character developing throughout the story. Margie, Raven’s mentor and mother figure, went from a sympathetic character to one I didn’t like much as the story progressed. Connor, the human/wyvern was a bit of an enigma and is gradually revealed as the story moves forward. I think my favorite character, though, was the Kryling, the firedrake!
What I didn’t like I really thought the rape scene could have been changed. The idea that Connor had to rape Raven to keep her magic from destroying both of them seemed odd to me - despite references earlier in the book about the necessity of Samara Maidens being controlled by taking their virginity. It was never clearly established that Raven was a Samara Maiden, so it just seemed unnecessary. I also thought Imelda was too stereotypical. I didn’t like the way Merrill played an important role in the book at first, but then faded away to a non-entity. Lastly, Raven's acceptance of the wyvern part of herself seemed out of character given her fear of the wyverns, in general.
Overall impression Darkspire Reaches was an overall enjoyable read. The characters were well developed, and the story moved along at a good pace. I didn’t care for the rape scene, nor for the way Raven fell for Connor after the event, but would still recommend this fantasy for adult fantasy readers.
My rating 4 Stars
A well spun fantasy novel. Raven is our heroine in this story. She is found as a babe by a woman named Margie who starts out as a kindly old witch. She raises Raven as her own and teaches her all the arts of herbs and certain magics. But when they are run out of their villiage by their people for witchcraft, Margie takes Raven to a people called the Aggressi. Once upon a time Margie had lived with this clan. Through blackmail she returns and I guess she sort of looses her mind because she does some wicked things, not least of all mistreating Raven. Raven is starved and miserable there and eventually escapes and finds who she believes is her own tribe of people, but they mistreat her too and eventually turn her over to the Aggressi people who want to burn her as a witch. All Raven's life she has feared the mysterious and powerful wyvern, which is a dragon, that she believes wants to find her and sacrifice her. Well a wyvern does find her when she is on an Aggressi pyre ready to be burnt. The wyvern saves her and this is when she meets the hero of our story Conner. He doesn't show up until halfway through the book and does not start out a very nice character. He is known as a Drakkan in his human form but he is actually a wyvern and the one who saves Raven's life. Upon meeting him she is terrified of him and what he does to her when she turns her magic on him didn't set well with me which is the only reason this book didn't receive five stars. However he does eventually redeem himself and becomes the kind of hero you do expect from a romance novel, it just takes him some time getting there, but that growth was aided by his growing love for Raven. These Aggressi people just won't quit when it comes to hunting down Raven. They locate her not long after she has begun to live with Conner in a master/servant relationship. They flee and encounter another villain, a female wyvern who tries to come between Conner and Raven. Much more occurs in this latter part of the story, but I will stop here and just say it is around this time the romance between the couple begins to develop. Also Raven matures as she learns the truth about her heritage and magical powers. It was good to see her mature from a scared young girl who is taken advantage of repeatedly into a woman who is comfortable with the powers within her. The story was intriguing, the writing clean and it really held my interest even though I'm not a big fan of fantasy. I would definitely recommend this if you like fantasy of this era, magic, magical creatures and dragons. They helped the story shine.
